44. The Dominators

The Dominators was the first proper episode I saw with Patrick Troughton. I mean I saw the 2nd Doctor in The Three Doctors before I saw any of his regular episodes. I think I may have actually have seen him in The Five Doctors before I saw him properly. But anyways, when my PBS station started showing the Second Doctor episodes, after jumping from 4th, to 3rd, to 5th (maybe) back to 1st then 2nd, I was well versed in Doctor Who.

At that point, the Tomb of the Cybermen was still missing so The Dominators was the first existing full episode. This story started Patrick's final series, season 6. So I had great anticipation and excitement to finally see a proper 2nd Doctor story. As the film rolled, it was several minutes before he finally appeared! There was all this set up for the guest actors, their silly drama, and the Dominators and their Quarks! The costumes were silly, as silly goes for the late 60's. The Dominators was quite menacing and the Quarks looked great but weren't functional.

So as an first proper 2nd Doctor story, it was very lackluster. The regular cast do shine through despite the poor script. But for a sleeper of a story, it does kick off an exciting season that culminates in one of the most exciting Doctor Who stories ever and that changes the Doctor's life forever.

43. The Wheel in Space

The Cybermen, again?! Hello Zoe! As the season began, so ends the season with our friendly neighborhood Cybermen paying a visit. This time they're just floating around in space. We are also introduced to new companion Zoe, a smart-as-a-whip computer genius, who tries to out-smart the Doctor at every turn.

Only two episodes of this story exist out of its original six. This really caps off a season that almost entirely no longer exists. From the film snippets and random episodes that do still exist, the tragedy of their destruction continues to compound itself.

Next thrilling episode- season 6 begins with The Dominators!

42. Fury from the Deep

Good bye Victoria! Hello Sonic Screwdriver! After a season on board he TARDIS, we bid farewell to Victoria. And for the first time, the Doctor uses his sonic screwdriver. This story also has one of the most terrifying monsters ever. Unfortunately we'll never see it because all episodes of this story no longer exist.

41. The Web of Fear

Hello my darling Yeti! Greetings Lethridge-Stewart! The Great Intelligence returns so soon after their first appearance and this time the Yeti are in the London Underground. See the recent episode The Snowmen to see the reason why the Yeti invaded the Underground.

This story is another victim of the systematic destruction of BBC tapes with only one episode still existing.

40. The Enemy of the World

The evil twin scenario is an old plot device. William Hartnell had his twin in The Massacre. And now Patrick Troughton gets his in The Enemy of the World. Unfortunately there is only one episode of this story that still exists. Which is a shame because Troughton gives a tour de force performance as Salamander.

39. The Ice Warriors

Introducing the Ice Warriors! Big giant lizard warriors from Mars! Sssssssss!!! This is the first of four appearances throughout the 2nd and 3rd Doctor's tenure. This story will be released on DVD in a few months with its two missing episodes animated, so for the first time we will be able to see the story in its most complete version since its original broadcast. I'll provide a more proper review when the DVD comes out.

In the meanwhile, the Ice Warriors will be turning to television in an upcoming new episode of Doctor Who! Yeah!! Ssssssssss!

38. The Abominable Snowmen

The Abominable Snowmen introduced the Great Intelligence and the Yeti to the Doctor Who mythos. Unfortunately only one episode of this story still exists. Another tragedy of this era. But in a lovely twist, Steven Moffet brought the Great Intelligence back in his recent Christmas special "The Snowmen", this time without the Abominable.
