74. Planet of the Spiders

It's the end of the road but the moment has been prepared for. After 5 years in the role, Jon Pertwee's tenure draws to a close. Through an exile, 3 companions (6 if you count the Brig, Benton and Yates), political machinations, alien invasions, earth-born threats, Bessie and a Whomobile, the 3rd Doctor has weathered an incredible run. While I'm not a fan of the 6 part stories, this one truly sums of the Pertwee era by ticking all the boxes and giving us the ultimate Pertwee episode.

This story reveals more about the Doctor's ability to regenerate, as it's officially named now. We also get a preview with the Doctor's old mentor and teacher Kampo regenerating earlier in the story. The gem of this story if the presence of Sarah Jane and the Brigadier at the moment of regeneration. After the past season with Sarah and several years with the Brig, there is heartfelt emotion and sadness as they watch the 3rd Doctor die and witness the 4th Doctor born. While Ben & Polly were present at the 1st Doctor's regeneration, there wasn't the heart of this. And no one was present for the 2nd Doctor's regeneration. This time we get real tears and a genuine sense of the Doctor dying from radiation poisoning. All in all, this is a perfect swan song to the Pertwee era.
