187. (3.6) The Lazarus Experiment

The Doctor finally returns Martha to her time period and home to discover her sister is working for a man who claims to be able to turn back the human body clock. At a posh party, Professor Lazarus seemingly goes from 70 to 40 years old. Of course there are side effects and he becomes a human eating monster. Martha's sister Tish is working for Lazarus and her mum and brother attend the party. We also get Harry Saxon name checked quite a bit in this one. The Doctor gets slapped by Martha's mom and he saves the day. He then invites Martha for another jaunt in the TARDIS. As they depart, Martha's mom leaves a message about information she's learned about the Doctor from Harry Saxon....

186B. (3.5) Evolution of the Daleks

Dalek Sec has now merged with Mr. Diagoras to become a hybrid and lead the Daleks to their next stage of evolution for the Daleks. The an amassed army of human bodies, the Daleks are ready to inhabit them for a new race of Daleks. Thankfully the Doctor intervenes and stops their evil plan, leaving only one Dalek left in existence (for now). Martha is quite resourceful throughout this story, striking up a nice friendship with Tullulah and her half-pig-man lover. Despite the Time War, the Daleks seem to keeps surviving much to the Doctor's frustration.

186A. (3.4) Daleks In Manhattan

After taking Martha to the distant past and the far future, he takes her to 1930's New York City for a little depression era song and dance. Unfortunately the Cult of Skaro survived their last encounter at Canary Wharf and are building a new army in this era. They also have pig slaves. And a young Spider-Man (hello Andrew Garfield). For some reason they want to add Dalekainium to the top of the Empire State Building. The Black Dalek absorbs Mr. Diagoras to become a Dalek-Human hybrid, free of the shell!

185. (3.3) Gridlock

The Doctor takes Martha to New Earth, where he took Rose last year, to discover the population of the  planet trapped underground on the highway. Little do we know that the planet had been infected with a plague and the people on the highway are survivors. The Doctor and Martha spend much of the story apart from each other and we see how well Martha stands on her own. The Doctor sets the people free and receives a cryptic  message from a dying Face of Boe. You Are Not Alone. And at Martha's insistence, the Doctor finally tells her the truth about his home planet and his own people.

184. (3.2) The Shakespeare Code

For Martha's first trip in the TARDIS, the Doctor takes her back to meet Shakespeare. Of course they quickly get embroiled in the machinations of alien witches conjuring an invasion in the Globe Theatre. Meanwhile Shakespeare flirts with Martha for the whole story and occasionally with the Doctor.  This is one of the most clever scripts ever, with Shakespearean quotes laced throughout the story. The story also shows Shakespeare as a young man and as quite a genius. The final moment of Queen Elizabeth I wanting the Doctor's head is a fun tease.

183. (3.1) Smith and Jones

Hello Martha Jones!

After the interim companion Donna, the Doctor meets medical student Martha Jones for a quick trip to the moon with alien rhinos. But the real menace is an old lady vampire who drinks blood through a straw. It's bonkers and mad yet Martha goes through it all like a trooper. Quite different from Rose, she develops a crush on the Doctor for a whole season of unrequited love. It's another fabulous introduction to a great character. We're mad for Martha!

182. (3.X) The Runaway Bride

Enter: Donna Noble!

Hot on the heels of Rose's dramatic departure, the Doctor is thrust together with the Runaway Bride Donna Noble. She's feisty, fiery, every day and fantastic! Donna's relationship with the Doctor is often compared to Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracey. She's the perfect tonic for the Doctor's broken hearts.

To continue the Christmas Day tradition, London is once again under attack from aliens. The Queen of the Racnoss is an amazing monster and the make up job surpasses anything previous. The robot Santas from last Christmas also make a return visit.

All in all, this is wonderful romp for the holidays and Donna is a super one-off companion... for now.....
