The Doctor takes Martha to New Earth, where he took Rose last year, to discover the population of the planet trapped underground on the highway. Little do we know that the planet had been infected with a plague and the people on the highway are survivors. The Doctor and Martha spend much of the story apart from each other and we see how well Martha stands on her own. The Doctor sets the people free and receives a cryptic message from a dying Face of Boe. You Are Not Alone. And at Martha's insistence, the Doctor finally tells her the truth about his home planet and his own people.
