159. Survival

The end is here but the moment has been prepared for.

After 26 consecutive seasons, we reach the end of the classic series. To add insult to injury, season 26 was probably the best season certainly in the McCoy era but possibly in the past 5 years. What started  in contemporary England, ends in contemporary England. And for the Doctor's final adversary it is his best adversary- The Master.

After the recent Ace story arc, the Doctor finally takes her home to Perivale for a visit to discover people have been mysteriously disappearing. Queue the Master and the Cheetah people. Obviously survival the fittest is a recurring theme, which is a sad statement at the time because Doctor Who was dying (for the moment).

For this finale, the Doctor emerges to the forefront again. His scenes with the Master are classic and this is probably one of the best Master stories in a long time. The climactic battle at the finale is worthy of song and praise. And the last scene of the Doctor and Ace walking into the sunset is a magic moment that will live forever.

The Doctor [the final lines of the original series]: There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, and the sea's asleep, and the rivers dream; people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, and somewhere else the tea's getting cold. Come on, Ace. We've got work to do.
