230. (7.1) Asylum of the Daleks

After about a 9 month hiatus, Doctor Who returns for the end of the Ponds for the new show's 7th season. Moffat states from the outset that there will be no two parters this season, only stand alone episodes. He promises each week will be like a feature movie, which mostly holds up throughout the season.

The story opens with the Ponds signing divorce papers. What what?! They're quickly kidnapped by the Daleks to assist the Doctor in breaking in to the Asylum of the Daleks. This story goes a long way to repairing the rep of the Daleks after their last major appearance in the Victory of the Daleks. The Daleks of many colors get downplayed and the old bronze Daleks return. The inhabitants of the Asylum are actually very cool with some classic Daleks in the background. There are many names dropped for the classic fan to pick up on. In the end, the Ponds find love again and the divorce is canceled.

The surprise of the story is the appearance of Jenna-Louise Coleman, who was previously announced as the Doctor's new companion debuting in the Christmas special. Playing Oswin Oswald trapped in the Asylum, she instantly lights up the screen with her fun banter. The twist at the end and her sacrifice are a complete surprise and leaves more questions than answers. Bravo Mr. Moffat!
